Thredbo

Had a day off the bikes today in Thredbo and went up Mt Kosciuszko. Nothing strenuous and definitely no climbing involved Just a chairlift up to 1927 metres and then a walk of 1 km to the snow.

Turns out that this Thredbo place was only started 54 years ago and modelled on a European ski village but it's now a fully blown ski resort in the winter ( which isn't really winter of course because it happens when the rest if us have summer). Anyway, recent as a resort as it might be, they did a good job in it but apparently had to remodel it a bit   a while back after landslides caused by snow melt took buildings out and killed a number if people ( about 19 I think). We're staying In the only ' A' frame building in town, the rest having been swept away in that incident.

It was very windy at the top of the Mountain but bright sunshine which  also illuminated the snow gums so that they sparkled.

Its all in the Kosciuszko National Park. The trip up the chairlift was well worth it and we got a deal on the ticket because of the biker weekend - the weekend is a charity fundraiser for kids with cancer so all the profits go to them. So 25 AUD for there and back with a bobsled ride included was OK.

The hot chocolate at the restaurant was worth the effort too. There is something about snow, mountains and fresh air that make drinks that I would never normally touch seem OK.

Tomorrow we're off again, heading east towards Albany and then later, down to Melbourne to catch the ferry over to Tasmania.

  1. We met you as you were leaving a Thredbo... Wishing you a safe and fantastic trip throughout the east of Oz, at least once you found your way out of the Village. ;-)
